ORIGIN & MANDATE

Why Sangathan Exists.

The story of how local colony pollution in Jamia Nagar led to an open-source civic operating system for citizens across India.

Born on the Streets of Jamia Nagar & Okhla

In the winter of 2023, nocturnal plastic and leaf burning near the Sarita Vihar railway underpass made the air in Ghaffar Manzil and Jamia Nagar hazardous. Elderly residents coughed through the night, and children developed severe asthma.

When neighbours took to WhatsApp, the group quickly drowned in anger, forwarded propaganda, and despair. When two residents visited the MCD Central Zonal office, junior engineers shrugged: "Give us written proof and diary receipts. We cannot act on verbal complaints."

That day, a fundamental truth became clear: verbal outrage produces zero accountability in the Indian bureaucratic system. What forces action is dated written records, calibrated sensor measurements, stamped diary receiving numbers, and verified resident collective mandates.

Incubated with Bahujan Queer Foundation

To give grassroots mohalla organizers institutional grounding without forcing every informal group to spend ₹50,000 on complex trust deeds, Sangathan partnered with Bahujan Queer Foundation (BQF), a Section 8 non-profit organization registered in New Delhi.

BQF provides community solidarity, legal guidance under Article 19(1)(c) of the Constitution of India, and non-financial accreditation to active collectives fighting environmental degradation, caste discrimination, and municipal apathy.
